Experience Moreton Island With Funducation

Moreton Island is Brisbane's undisputed ECO Adventure Playground. There is so much to do and see on Moreton Island,  it's not hard to see why Schools and Colleges come from all over Australia to this unique fun filled adventure classroom.

Our mission is to make your visit to Moreton Island more than just a beautiful place to go, but an "experience to remember." In education, remembering what you have learnt is everything.

Why Moreton Island?

Moreton Island offers the MOST UNIQUE learning experience for subjects such as Geography, History, Biology, Marine & Aquatic Studies, Indiginous Culture and applied sciences. Trailblazer Tours is proud to be able to offer some of the most unique experiences in Australia to enable your students to get the very most our of their School Camp Experience, including -

  • Transparent Kayaking over coral and fish, seeing everything you float over (Amazing Experience)
  • Snorkelling around the Tangalooma Shipwrecks OR enjoy snorkelling school (for the younger ones)
  • Sand Boarding down huge Sand Hills
  • 4WDing through forests and along Beaches in our giant 4WD buses
  • See and study Marine Life and History at Cape Moreton Lighthouse
  • Learn to "CAMP" in Tent camping AND MUCH MORE

And let's not forget the FUN factor. We have understood from the start that the most effective way to teach is for the students to enjoy the learning experience. Moreton Island is filled with awe and wonder which in itself is FUN. Trailblazer Tours suppliment that Awe and Wonder with INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCES. Snorkelling the Tangalooma Wrecks naturally raises many questions such as "WHY is there so much marine life around the wrecks," leading to discussions all about eco systems and the environment. These naturally occurring questions are answered as we tour the Island on our Fun Facts Mission. Environmental Sciences, Biology, Marine Studies, History and Applied Sciences benefit greatly from seeing the dramatic environmental changes that occur on Moreton Island from season to season. Moreton Island is attracting school groups from all over the Australia to study its unique biodiversity (and have some fun while they are there). For South East Queensland Schools, this wonderful phenomenon of Nature is right at your doorstep - and we can get you there.

The following is a list of attrations and points of study on a Trailblazer Tour of Discovery on Moreton Island. Not all camps on Moreton Island can cover every attration and study point listed below. This is dependant upon the amount of time you intend to stay on Moreton Island and the ciriculum points you wish to cover. For example, some school study camps spend more time studying environmental impacts in camp grounds, while other schools will contrate upon marine studies in rock pools and snorkelling. A  5-Day camp will usually experience ALL the below attractions, while a 2-Day will only cover a few of the main attractions or study areas.

Snorkeling is the most well known activity to enjoy and learn on Moreton Island. The Tangalooma Ship Wrecks are a Brisbane Icon and snorkeling the Tangalooma Wrecks is a MUST.

The Tangalooma Wrecks are a group of 14 ships that have been placed in a line parelel to the beach to help form a safe anchorage for boats in the event of strong westerly winds. This in turn has created an amazing ecosystem of fish and coral - all concentrated on mass into a very small area. The result is a colour explosion of marine life growing and swimming within the shipwrecks, giving

Snorkeling Fish Feeding

oportunity for students to explore this marine paradise. All snorkeling and safety equpment is supplied to ensure the best experience possible. Students are supplied with wetsuits and gloves to ensure they are kept safe from coral and barnicles. Our Snorkeling tours are fully guided and supervised with trained instructors equiped with life rings. For students who do not feel confident in the water, safety flotation vests are offered to garuntee safety, and for those who find it difficult put their face in the water, we even have "See Thru" Body Boards that allows the user to float on top of the body board, and look though a porthole into the world below. At Trailblazer Tours, we have it ALL covered.

Sand Boarding (Sand Tobbogganing)

This is another "Unique" Moreton Island Activity. We take our big 4WD bus up into "THE DESERT" where the sand dunes are high, and the sand is "FAST and FURIOUS." Laying on special boards, students get to experience one of Moreton Islands Greatest Traditions of sliding down the giant sand dune at speeds of up to 70km/h. This is a fully supervised and directed activity by our fully trained tour guides. The thrill of sand tobboganing is a real favourite for students, and offers exercise like no other (Ideal for wearing students out so the teacher can get some sleep at night).

Explore some of the most popular attractions on Moreton Island in our exciting 4WD buses. This tour includes a 4WD trek to North Point, Honeymoon Bay, Cape Moreton Lighthouse and the Visitor Information centre where students learn all about life at the first lighthouse built in Queensland.  The view from Cape Moreton is spectacular and students have the opportunity to spot dolphins, turtles, manta rays and Whales during Whale Season.  We finish this all off with a refreshing dip in Blue Lagoon while learning why the lagoon is no longer blue, and why our skin comes out feeling so soft after our swim! See the key attractions of Moreton Island, this is the most popular of our tours.

With a focus on local history, this tour transports students to a time where horses were the only form of transport and deliveries came every 3 months.  Students learn about the island’s first inhabitants – the Ngugi Aboriginal tribe and how they survived on the island for over 2000 years. We visit bunker remnants from World War 2 and students have a chance to imagine what life may have been like at the time, living on Moreton Island as a soldier.  We visit Queensland’s first lighthouse and learn how it was built by 25 civil prisoners using bullock teams and hard work. Students also have a chance to walk through the interesting Cape Moreton Information Centre and read all about early life on Moreton Island.Tidal-Flats-Crabs

Visit a rarely trafficked part of the island – The Tidal Flats.  A diverse eco-system filled with mangroves, wetlands, and sand dunes where students can spot wildlife and look for the soldier crabs that love this area.  Students are asked to build dams in the tidal pools to understand the forces of erosion that threaten the island – see who can build the strongest wall!  Teachers are invited to create their own biological studies to support this tour.

Be amazed at how many sand hills have been created in this area – and be assured that the “little” sand hills are anything but small!  Students will have a chance to walk to the western most sand hill and see if they can spot Brisbane. If time permits this is another chance to have a go at sand boarding if you didn’t get enough the first time!  This activity is easily combined with the History tour and is a fun way to finish of an educational day.

Usually done Early Morning to catch the Sunrise, enjoy the walk up the world's highest Coastal Sand Dune - Mt Tempest. Just under 300m in height,
you can expect many steps. Seats are provided along the way and at the lookout where you can get a fantastic group photo. After your steep climb, you are rewarded with 360-degree views of the island, Moreton Bay Marine Park and, on a clear day, Brisbane City and the Glass House Mountains
